Turning compassion into financial relief for cancer patients nationwide
By Like Media
A powerhouse non-profit is changing the way cancer Warriors receive support. Founded in Enumclaw, Washington, by Katy Tinney-Olson, Kerry Solmonsen, and Shelly Tinney-Miller, The Cancer Cartel has grown from a small idea into a national movement dedicated to helping those facing the staggering financial burden of cancer.
“Six years ago, Katy and Kerry were driving home from volunteering at Northwest Harvest, reflecting on the deep gratitude they felt for their survivorship and the staggering cost of fighting cancer—not just medical bills, but every expense that piles up along the way,” the co-founders explain. The idea took off when Katy brought her sister Shelly into the conversation. “What started with collecting and selling donated designer fashion quickly expanded through brand partnerships and events into the powerhouse organization we are today.”
From the start, the mission was clear: every dollar raised goes directly to Warriors in need. Early efforts were hands-on, simple, and unforgettable. “Our first solution was simple and direct: we bought Visa gift cards, went to Seattle Cancer Care, and handed them out to people waiting outside the pharmacy. The reactions were unforgettable.” When COVID-19 hit, the organization pivoted to virtual interviews and grants via Zoom, creating moments of relief and joy for countless recipients.
Since then, The Cancer Cartel has supported over 1,700 Warriors and granted $1.1 million to individuals across 48 states, with plans to reach all 50 this year. Local stories highlight the tangible impact: a Puget Sound mom could cover her power bill and gas, giving her “the first full night of sleep in months.” A rural Washington man, choosing between groceries and gas, felt “someone had wrapped their arms around his whole life and held it steady.” And a Tacoma single dad was able to keep his family in their home, describing the support as “a lifeline in the middle of the storm.”
Applications for financial assistance are submitted by hospital-employed case managers or social workers, ensuring proper vetting. The grant portal opens at 9 am Pacific Time on the first business day of each month, filling within minutes due to high demand.
Looking ahead to 2026, The Cancer Cartel’s annual gala—set for May 16, 2026, at the Foss Waterway Museum & Seaport—promises an evening of food, fun, and fundraising. The event welcomes sponsors, volunteers, and ticketed guests to contribute directly to Warriors in need. Other signature events include Fashion Funds the Fight, luxury resale fundraisers, and a golf tournament in Simi Valley, California.
Supporters can also participate year-round through recurring monthly pledges, donations in cash, stock, crypto, or in-kind, and by joining the Donate Designer program. “Whether it is one special item or an entire collection, every donation helps us say yes to more Warriors and keep our mission thriving.” Youth can get involved through the Junior Ambassador Program, gaining leadership experience while supporting local initiatives.
In 2026 and beyond, The Cancer Cartel aims to expand its impact, grow monthly support, and reach more Warriors nationwide. “We are the Good Cartel, a powerful force of passionate people united in doing as much good as possible. Every action, big or small, counts. Join us, follow our journey, share our story, and help us keep saying yes to Warriors who need us.”
