What to do if you or your family is in a car accident

Navigating the proper steps, from your health and safety to your car insurance coverage

By The Health Connection

As the fall is fast approaching, daylight is beginning to shorten, and vastly more people are on the roads, we are seeing a huge increase in our patients who have been involved in car accidents. Some accidents are worse than others, but they can often be very stressful and rarely are they just ‘no big deal’. If you or a loved one have ever had the unfortunate luck of being involved in an MVA, you know what I am talking about. Here are few important points to ponder if you ever find yourself in this situation:

  • First and foremost, the immediate health and safety of you and your passengers is the number one priority! If you are injured or even feel slightly ‘woozy’ be sure to get medical attention immediately. In any major collision, it goes without saying, you should go immediately to the hospital. Often-times, in lower impact collisions, you may feel fine but have hidden injuries that can show up later (This is where we can help)

  • Second, assuming you haven’t sustained any major injuries, you’ll need to navigate the complicated world of car insurance to try and get your car fixed or replaced and your medical bills paid. This can be very confusing and stressful at times, however with proper insurance coverage, generally everything will be covered if the claim is handled properly. Although not always necessary, many patients opt to hire a personal injury lawyer to assistthem during this process. Using an attorney to help you with a personal injury claim is sometimes a difficult decision, but we have found that our patients who have legal counsel during their recovery, often have better outcomes. They are usually able to devote most of their time and energy to their recovery, instead of dealing with time consuming and frustrating calls from insurance adjustors. If you have any questions, we’d be happy to assist you in finding the right attorney.

  • Third, you’ll need to address those nagging and painful symptoms from the injuries you sustained in the accident. This is where we at The Health Connection excel in getting you and your body put back together so you can feel good again. Here are a list of possible symptoms from injuries related to a recent MVA:

    • Neck and lower back pain

    • Headaches, dizziness, nausea

    • Shoulder and / or hip pain

    • Sciatica and / or numbness and tingling in the extremities

  • Fatigue, irritability, and / or lack of sleepTreatment and full recovery from your injuries can take anywhere from several weeks to several months, however with proper care, it is possible to get your life back after being injured in an MVA.At The Health Connection, we have many options for treatment so you get the best care possible:

    • Chiropractic care for your alignment and general health of your spine and nervous system.

    • Massage therapy to work out those sore muscles and to improve your chances of preventing life-long aches and pains from the accident.

    • Acupuncture to alleviate pain, spasm, and headaches which are very common after being involved in a car accident

    • Cold Laser to help minimize the pain and inflammation after any recent injury, and to dramatically cut down your healing time.

  • Lastly, you’ll need to replace your car. Unfortunately we can’t help you with that, but that’s the fun part, because who doesn’t like to shop for a new car??We sincerely hope that you stay safe on the roads, but should you need this information, we hope it was helpful!
