Preserving automotive heritage in the heart of Tacoma
By Like Media Team
LeMay – America’s Car Museum (ACM) is a dynamic tribute to the automobile and its enduring impact on American culture. Located in Tacoma, the museum showcases more than 300 vehicles spanning over a century of innovation, design, and history. It’s more than a collection, it’s a living story of mobility and lifestyle that continues to evolve.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, ACM is overseen by a dedicated Board of Directors. Its mission is clear: “to preserve and interpret the history and technology of the automobile and its influence on American culture.” Through thoughtful curation and professional operations, the Museum ensures that the stories behind these machines are passed on to future generations. “The Museum will sustain its vital public service through viable, professional operations and complementary alliances,” they share.
At the heart of ACM lies the legacy of Harold and Nancy LeMay, Spanaway residents who amassed the world’s largest private automobile collection in the 1980s and 1990s—over 3,500 vehicles at its peak. “Harold never came across a car he didn’t love or appreciate,” says the team. After Harold’s passing in the early 2000s, Nancy, the LeMay family, the city of Tacoma, and the Board brought his vision to life. On June 2, 2012, the museum opened its doors, and 13 years later, it still houses part of the original LeMay collection.
Visitors can explore over 300 vehicles, from early 1900s Model Ts to mid-century American classics and sleek modern supercars like Lamborghinis and Ferraris. The current “Rare & Luxurious” exhibit is a showstopper, featuring elite models such as the 1930 Duesenberg Model J and a 2024 Ferrari SP3 Daytona.
Beyond static displays, ACM offers interactive experiences including professional racing simulators, a photo booth car, a slot car track, and a family center complete with a pinewood derby track, making it a dynamic education center for all ages.
Community engagement is a top priority. ACM hosts and attends events year-round, including the Cruise-In car shows and Drive-In Movies each summer. It partners with AAA for eco-initiatives like Batteries to Branches and supports health drives and local celebrations such as the Pride Festival, the Maritime Parade, and the Car Show.
Supporters can help sustain the museum’s mission through donations or memberships, all available on their website: AmericasCarMuseum.org.
Ranked among the top 10 automotive attractions in North America, LeMay – America’s Car Museum is not just a car museum; it’s a living archive, private event venue, and education center dedicated to preserving America’s automotive heritage.
